Cotton & Polyester Rolls

Cotton Canvas Rolls
Cotton canvas is a favourite painting surface for many artists for a variety of reasons—duck canvas is perfect for painters who like to use heavy paint, it stretches easily, it has the same archival qualities of linen, and it is affordable. Our cotton duck canvas rolls are perfect for artists stretching their own cotton canvases (with canvas stretcher bars) and for schools and art supply stores that need large quantities.
We are often asked what cotton duck is. The term “Duck” comes from the Dutch word Doek, which refers to this type of weave. Simply put, it is a heavy, plain-woven cotton fabric. Cotton duck canvas differs from plain canvas in that the threads are more tightly woven, making it a good surface for art. Cotton canvas is classified according to its weight and surface texture, and we offer a wide variety to meet your preferences.
Benefits of Cotton Canvas Rolls
Our cotton canvas rolls have several benefits for artists:
  • Their relatively smooth surface isn’t prone to snagging and tearing.
  • Cotton can’t be beat for tightness.
  • It is easier to stretch than linen, making cotton canvas rolls a good fit for the artist who is learning how to stretch canvas.
Priming Your Cotton Canvas
Your cotton canvas must be sealed and primed before painting on it. Properly priming a cotton canvas provides the proper support and allows the media to adhere to it. If you work in oils, priming your canvas protects it from the degenerative effects of the oil paint. Some primers (or ground), such as Gesso, will seal and prime in a single process. Our canvas rolls come primed or unprimed, depending on whether you wish to prime it yourself.
